Top 10 ways the restaurant industry hijacking your brain

Posted on May 14th, 2010 in Life Teaching by SirSimplySaw

Here is a post by my teacher in high school in facebook that I think worth sharing with all you guys.

Top 10 Ways the Restaurant Industry is Hijacking Your Brain

1. Most of the foods served at restaurants combine tempting amounts of sugar, fat, and salt. They are either loaded onto a core ingredient (such as meat, vegetable, potato, or bread), layered on top of it, or both. For instance:Potato skins: The potato is hollowed out and the skin is fried, which provides a substantial surface area for “fat pickup.”
Then some combination of bacon bits, sour cream, and cheese is added. The result: fat on fat on fat on fat, loaded with salt.
Buffalo wings: The fatty parts of a chicken get deep-fried. Then they are served with creamy or sweet dipping sauce thatSee More’s heavily salted. Usually they’re par-fried at a production plant, then fried again at the restaurant, which doubles the fat. The result: sugar on salt on fat on fat on fat.
Spinach dip: The spinach provides little more than color—a high-fat, high-salt dairy product is the main ingredient. The result: a tasty dish of salt on fat.

2. Conditioning our brains. Food scientists create “hyperpalatable” foods. These foods stimulate the appetite and prompt us to eat more even after we’re full. These foods layer sugar, fat, and salt in optimal amounts in a way that conditions our brains to eat more and more. Instead of satisfying our hunger, we are setting ourselves up to crave them again.

3. The food industry develops “fun foods.” By creating hyperpalatable foods that are entertaining, widely available and socially acceptable, the food industry contributes to this vicious cycle. Millions of Americans report loss of control in the face of food, lack of feeling satisfied, and a preoccupation with these foods.

4. The food industry creates “adult baby food.” Fun food literally melts in your mouth: by eliminating the need to chew, modern food processing techniques allow us to eat faster and consume more calories. Processing meat and produce—a techniques employed by many restaurant chains and food manufacturers—creates a kind of “adult baby food.” The harder-to-chew-elements—such as fiber and gristle—are removed. The result is food that can be eaten quickly, and without much effort.

5. Faster consumption and cost-saving steps. Consider Chili’s boneless Shanghai chicken wings: A food designer says that about them, “taking it off the bone is like taking the husk off the nut.” That processing step reduces the need for chewing, making the food faster to consume. The wings contain a solution of up to 25 percent water, hydrolyzed soy protein, salt, and sodium phosphate. The water is there to bulk up the chicken—the industry calls this “reducing shrinkage.” Water is also cheaper than chicken breast, so it’s less costly to produce. And finally, water makes the food softer and chewing easier.

6. “When in doubt, throw cheese and bacon on it” is a standard joke in the world of chain restaurants. But it works. Along with enhancing melt and making food easy to eat, these layers are cheaper to produce than the central ingredient (such as meat or fish) they flavor. They’re also visually appealing, straightforward, and familiar. Example: T.G.I. Friday’s Parmesan-Crusted Sicilian Quesadilla, is described on the menu as follows: “Packed with sautéed chicken, sausage, bruschettta marinara, [and] bacon and oozing with Monterey Jack cheese. We coat it with Parmesan and pan-fry it to a crispy, golden brown, then drizzle it with balsamic glaze.”

7. Food is assembled, not actually cooked, in chain restaurant kitchens. These restaurants make use of “individually quick frozen” foods. Shrimp, potatoes, and chicken nuggets are blasted with cold air, cold nitrogen, or cold carbon dioxide as they travel along a conveyor belt so they freeze in discrete pieces. They are often partially fried before they are quick-frozen. Then they are plunged, straight from the package and still frozen, back into fat for a second frying.

8. Think you’re eating healthy when you order grilled, marinated chicken? Think again. A common way to get marinade into meat is through needle injection. Hundreds of needles are used to pierce the meat, tearing up the connective tissue, to add solutions of salt, sugar, and fat. These injections not only increase flavor, but they also make the meat fall apart in our mouths.

9. Sugar by another name. If a food containes more sugar than any other ingredient, federal regulations dictate that sugar be listed first on the label. So, to trick health-conscious mothers who scan food labels for the word “sugar,” manufacturers hide the amount of sugar by listing its different sources separately, pushing each down the list. Breakfast cereal, for example, often includes some combination of sugar, brown sugar, fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, and molasses—each listed separately.

10. Creative chemistry. Chemical processing evolved to extend the shelf life of products and to lower food costs. More recently, the industry has directed its creative chemistry toward increasing sensations like “mouth feel” and finding new ways to artificially simulate real flavors using flavor enhancers. It’s all about creating novelty and impact.

A little detour along the way

Posted on March 21st, 2010 in Life Teaching by SirSimplySaw

I am the kind of guy who like to plan ahead but at the same time live the moments although I have to admit at times I might get distracted with my future plan. Plans are just like holidays , all the planning before the real thing causes more excitement than the thing itself. As my days in the UK are numbered I have to do a little bit of planning.

Initially my plan is to get more experience in the F&B industry when I am back in Malaysia plus doing in depth market research and etc such as looking for potential investor who believes in myself and my business plan before the launch of my first restaurant out of my hundreds or maybe thousands more that yet to come by the end of year 2011.

As most of you might experience yourselves , sometimes plans doesn’t always goes exactly the way we planned at the beginning. I believe thats exactly whats happening to me right now. I am taking a little detour in between now and the opening of my first restaurant. I am actually planning for my next BIG PROJECT that will be totally AWESOME !!!

So whats my next BIG PROJECT ? It has to do with a popular reality TV show thats in its 10th season in the US, 4th season in the UK, 5th season in Australia, and so on and so forth in other countries . While the Asia version just concluded its first season. YES I am talking about THE BIGGEST LOSER. Well I am planning to join and conquer The Biggest Loser Asia Season 2.

Why do I want to join a reality TV show that bring out the worst of people, that’s torturing, thats might create certain false stereotype of myself ? The answer is simple , its time for a complete makeover for Saw and beside the fame and the grand prize that come along with it isn’t too bad.

I have to admit that there are certain things started to bother me lately that make me so keen to join this show ;
1. ) Saw is losing his spark , so he needs to rebrand himself
2.) I would like to improve the physical stuff I can do, if now I can do 20 push up I would like to do 200 or even 2000 after this
3.) I need the extra energy to create my empire
4.) I m starting to feel not so healthy
5.) any other reason that you and I can think of

I have to admit I am being too comfortable with my current condition , in fact I am dangerously liking it until days ago. You see I used to like being Big Bone ( actually Fat/Obese la but put big bone sound nicer ) actualy I quite big bone myself but I am obese at the same time.
- everywhere I go people notices me
- it makes me stand out from the crowd
- people remembers me eventhough they just met me once or twice
- normally I got the comfort of the front seat in the car or double seat in the bus
- the steward at stadium open the VIP entrance for me
- it makes me look fearful to those mugger
- it makes me look younger
- ETC

So you see being ‘BIG BONE’ is not all negative as it has its advantages as well but like I said is time to change.

Anyway during the ending of the season 1 finale, they mentioned that Season 2 audition will commenced soon. Although I do not have the full details on the audition yet but I believe I need to submit an audition video to impress the producer. A 4 mins long audition video and yet I do not have any ideas yet at the moment. I wonder what kind of video can make me stand out , out of the all the people who stood out if you get what I mean.

I am cracking my head on the audition video as I believe it will make or break my chance to be in the show. So I am hoping you guys could give me some ideas on how to make a great audition video on myself for the show.

So THE BIGGEST LOSER ASIA SEASON 2 here I come.

the-big

Loyalty , security or stupidity ?

Some of us like to have plenty of choices in life while some prefer to be conservative and stick to their original choice all the time.

I got this friend of my , he is very different from me especially in making choices. Everytime when we go and have a meal at this so called ‘Western Food’  places back in Malaysia he will always and I mean ALWAYS order ‘Chicken Chop’ no matter which shop we went to as for me I always order whatever the special is of that shop. I always like to try new things although sometimes it is not too new just different name given to it.

You see by sticking to your original choices  you are always quite sure of what to expect from the experience to the taste to the texture or shall I say it is a safe choice. While if you like to try new things or new places you might get some not so pleasant experience but at times you will be suprise by what the new places can offer.

I always believe life should be about having fun and trying new stuff, most of the time I would like to keep my mind and option open to EVERYTHING. I mean at times some of the stuff that I tried or explore might sound a little bit crazy but hey NO PAIN NO GAIN.

BUT

At times I am not sure is it because I like trying new things or I got bored easily with the same ol same ol. You see maybe I am just saying that I like to try new things just make myself feel less guilty when throwing those old things away.

Well I did let go of some stuff that I am not so interested in quite alot of times. I am not someone that will cling on something or someone that I am no longer interested in. I ‘BACK OUT , PULL BACK and LET GO’ it is as simple as that just like years back when they have this advertistment teaching you how to use the self service petrol pump ‘ANGKAT , TOLAK , MASUK , PICIT’ ( LIFT, PUSH , PENETRATE , SQUEEZE ) .

Ahha I can’t believe after so many years I can still remember that phrase, I believe the advert first appeared in the mid 90s. Kudos to the advertising team that did that commercial. I guess the reason I still remember it simply because it is so catchy and at times can be very dirty. I am sure you get what I mean you dirty minded people. I mean any guy will get the wrong idea if a girl whisper this to his ears  ‘ LIFT , PUSH , PENETRATE , SQUEEZE ‘ am I in the wrong for thinking this way ?

Anyway back to the topic , you see some people will keep on working at the same company , same place , same position and some worst case scenario same old pay for a very VERY VERY long time even though they no longer have the passion or even the soul to work there anymore. Is it because of their loyalty , security or stupidity ?

While they are some people who still in a relationship even there are no love between them anymore or a relationship turned sour especially those married couples. I don’t know why it is so difficult for one to say ‘I don’t have feelings for you anymore and I believe now is the right time for both of us to move forward instead of just wasting our time with each other’  . Is it because of loyalty , security or stupidity ?

Then we have this kind of people who sort of claim they are a disciple/son/follower of some religion but yet they don’t really understand the teaching of it or connected to God. So what they do is simply follow it blindly without really understand the whole thing. Is it because of loyalty , security or stupidity ?

You see Saw ain’t those kind of guy ,
-Saw say no when things isn’t right
-Saw say no when he no longer have the passion
-Saw seek new things if the old one expires
-Saw don’t like wasting his time on things he has no interest in
-Saw move on when the right time to do so

That’s why most of the time Saw isn’t the perfect Son / Student / Partner / Friend / Teacher / Employee / Follower /ETC to most people because Saw has the mind of his own and the guts to do the things he wants. Saw did not follow blindly as he keep on seeking what’s best for him , it might affects the others but Saw knew if he didn’t do what he did he will regret it at the end of the day.

Don’t get me wrong , I am not asking you to be a playboy , frog , fanatics or whatsoever but I am just telling you to let it go when you have to let it go, to hold on to it when you have to hold on to it.

So am Saw in the wrong ? Well Saw is not according to Saw. Is all this loyalty , security or stupidity ?

Ps. I couldn’t find that ‘ Angkat , Tolak , Masuk , Picit ‘ advert anywhere. If any of you bump into it could you be kind enough to share it with me. Many thanks.

Am I in the wrong ?

Posted on January 31st, 2010 in Life Teaching by SirSimplySaw

Its a rare occasion for me to be awake such early in the morning , after finishing my official chores I proceed to Sainsbury to get some groceries around noon.

All this time being a scout and a person, I try to help those in needs whenever I can. Although my dad always remind me not to simply help anyone as there are alot of crooks out there especially when you are at foreign places. Well as you people know I don’t really do everything my dad asked me to so I always try to help those in needs eventhough at times they might look a little suspicious but of course I will always take precautions to ensure my own safety.

I am sure you have heard of how dangerous the world can be , the stories such as
-people got their organs harvested when they thought they got lucky and going to make sweet love with a gorgeous babe but waking up in a tub full of ice without some of their organs.
-people got kidnapped and chopped off their limbs and other body parts so that they will work as professional beggars or some freaks in freakshow at 3rd world country
-people got cheated of their fortune or rape by someone who claim they can help that person to overcome some bad luck or evil spirits
Of course there are more worst case scenarios but I am sure you get my point

Anyway after buying my groceries I walked to the bus stop to take a bus back , 20 metres to the bus stop I came across an old lady in her mid 50s I suppose holding a shopping trolley and 2 small bags of groceries. As I come across hundreds of old ladies week in week out with their shopping trolley and bags so I don’t take much notice of it. As I was waiting for the bus, a few minutes later I saw the old lady again waiting for the same bus.

When the bus arrived she was mumbling something to the bus driver which I overhead a little. She was saying ” You fucking people don’t help me with my groceries just because I am not British”. I think she is an Italian or something. Then the bus driver said ” Did you just swear ? That’s not very nice of you” and then the old lady reply ” Yes I was swearing, just in case you fucking still haven’t figure it out yet I am not a big man so fuck you all” and she was throwing tantrum when she paid for her fare. I was a little disturbed with the comments but I don’t really bother because swearing and shouting is such a norm.

After she finished loading her stuff in the bus, she didn’t take any sit while but just standing there beside the seats. She then shout to all the people in the bus saying ” You fucking people never help an old lady with her groceries, oh yes I am swearing so fuck you people”. Along the way when people hop in the bus she was giving the FUCK OFF face to everyone even though she was obstructing the way. When she reaches her stop like 3 stops away , she take her time to take her stuff out and as the bus is moving away she show the worldwide sign for FUCK YOU , yes the middle finger to everyone in the bus.

I was left speechless with her action although I can understand her frustration of having to carry quite alot of groceries but I do condemn her actions. I mean unlike small towns where everyone knows everyone , London is a freaking HUGE city so is like almost nobody knows anyone. If you need any help, all you have to do is ask and I am sure there are people more than willing to help but if you expect other people goes around asking people do they need help in city like London is very unlikely. I think if I goes around asking everyone I see that might need help and offer them help might lead to a few things ,
- I might get a few visit from the Police department that some people might issue me with restrain order
- I might get a couple of lawyer letters for causing harrasment to their clients
- I might get beaten up by people who might think I might attempt to rob some old ladies of their groceries

You see sometimes being a nice person is not such a nice actions after all, it depends on situation to be nice and personal experience tells me that we can’t be nice all the time as it might lead into more troubles and cause unhappiness to yourself.

Back to the old lady , the amount of groceries that she bought doesn’t look for one person only so if she intended to buy so many stuff maybe she should get an extra help when she buy her groceries, of course I don’t know whats her circumstances but throwing tantrum at the public are simply nasty. Beside that she can always buy her stuff online and got it deliver to her doorstep as those big supermarkets do provide this kind of services.

I guess never a day passes without those little suprises in life, I do hope that whatever is bothering that old lady she will get over it and look at the bright side of life.
